Hidden deep in the Peruvian Andes, Waqrapukara is an ancient archaeological site revered for its stunning panoramic views and sacred significance. With expert guides leading the way, this expedition promises a blend of exploration, cultural immersion, and natural beauty, offering a unique glimpse into Peru’s rich heritage and the serene beauty of its highlands.
Exploring the impressive Inca construction of Waqrapukara, known as the «horn-shaped fortress», will be an unforgettable experience. This site is located in the Apurimac River canyon, hidden and little frequented by travelers, offering a treasure for those looking for something different.
The name Waqrapukara translates as «horn-shaped fortress.» Located 4,300 meters above sea level, at the top of a deep, forest-covered ravine, this sacred site combines impressive stone architecture with spectacular natural formations and small surrounding lagoons.
The archaeological monument is surrounded by extensive platforms, plazas and a «stone forest» that resembles thrones, where gigantic mythological figures seem to contemplate the Andean landscape.
For this day, it is essential to leave early, at 5:00 am, to start a bus journey towards the Acomayo district, until you finally reach Cocha (4000 m / 13123 ft), where you will begin a 2½ hour walk to Waqrapukara . The geography of the place is rugged, with impressive natural rock formations and small lagoons, home to a varied wildlife that includes condors, llamas, alpacas, vicuñas, wild horses and wild ducks.
During the walk, we will be able to enjoy the abundant flora and fauna typical of the region as we head towards our destination, Waqrapukara. Here, we will take a guided tour that will include highlights such as Intipunku (Puerta del Sol), the main square, the towers, the terraces, the Wiracocha enclosure and cave paintings depicting llamas. The archaeological complex is strategically located along a rocky promontory, built around two horn-shaped peaks, and features eight Inca terraces with retaining walls and stone stairs.
After exploring Waqrapukara, we will embark on a three-hour journey back along an ancient trail to the town of Waqui, where our private bus awaits us to take us back to the city of Cusco.
