The 4-day, 3-night Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is recognized as one of the most impressive treks in the world. During this four-day journey, hikers enjoy impressive landscapes where nature and Inca architecture intertwine in an astonishing way. The classic Inca Trail hike to Machu Picchu covers a total distance of 39.60 kilometers.
The tour combines imposing mountains, lush jungle and picturesque valleys, creating a fantastic world where both sunrise and sunset are mysterious and captivating moments. During the four days of walking, several notable Inca archaeological complexes are visited such as Runkuraqay, Sayaqmarka, Puyupatamarca and Wiñay Huayna. The fourth day culminates with arrival at the majestic Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

At 5 in the morning, we leave from the hotels in Cusco, located 3,350 meters above sea level, on a tourist bus bound for the Sacred Valley of the Incas. During the trip, we will be able to enjoy beautiful landscapes, pass through typical and picturesque towns, until we reach kilometer 82, located 2600 meters above sea level. This is the starting point of the walk, where the control and registration for tourists is carried out. Here we also meet the group of porters who will accompany us along the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu for 4 days.
In Miskay, at 2700 meters above sea level, we enjoy a lunch prepared by our cook and visit the archaeological complex of Llactapata, located at 2650 meters above sea level. Then we continue our tour to our first camp, Huayllabamba, a beautiful place with a temperate climate. Dinner and accommodation take place here. The estimated walking time on this first day is approximately 7 hours.
After a very early breakfast, on a cool morning we began our walk from the place known as Llulluchapampa, located 3850 meters above sea level. We continue along a scenic path ascending until we reach Warmihuañusca, the highest point of the entire route at 4200 meters above sea level. From here, we can see the snow-capped Veronica and a part of the iconic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. After a brief rest, we began the descent towards the deep valley of Pacaymayu, 3500 meters above sea level, where we set up our camp. The estimated walking time for this day is approximately 7 hours.
After a very early breakfast prepared by our cook, we enjoyed a beautiful day of hiking through a variety of vegetation and altitudinal flats along the way. We pass through the levels of Piso Quechua and Yunga.
The next important step is Runkuraqay, located at 3900 meters above sea level, a beautiful archaeological site where we ascend along well-preserved Inca Trail trails. Then we arrive at Sayacmarca, 3600 meters above sea level, another important strategically built archaeological site. We continue our way through a spectacular landscape, with mountains that seem to observe our journey from afar. Finally, we reach Phuyupatamarca, at 3580 meters above sea level, an impressive place that makes us feel close to the sky due to the proximity of the clouds.
From here, we descend along original trails of the Inca Trail until we reach Wiñayhuayna, 2650 meters above sea level, where we establish our last camp. Here we will celebrate with a small celebration during dinner. The total walking time on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is approximately 7 hours, with a temperate climate that accompanies us throughout the day.
On this day we will start breakfast earlier than usual, around 4 am. Equipped with flashlights, we head towards the Puerta del Sol or Inti Punku, located 2780 meters above sea level. From here, we will enjoy the sunrise over the Inca city of Machu Picchu and Waynapicchu. Our main objective is to reach our final goal, Machu Picchu, located 2400 meters above sea level, a magical and enigmatic place.
Once in Machu Picchu, we will take a guided tour of the main sectors of the Inca citadel. Afterwards, you’ll have free time to take photos and explore some more on your own. At the time indicated by our guide, we will meet at the Aguas Calientes train station (Machupicchu Pueblo) to board the tourist train to Ollantaytambo. From there, we will transfer by bus back to the imperial city of Cusco and then to your hotel.
