Overview

The Lares Trek offers an exciting alternative for those who want to explore the mountains of the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu through the Lares Valley. Throughout this journey, adventurers will enjoy the rich flora and fauna, discover Inca remains, contemplate snow-capped peaks, and marvel at scenic lagoons and natural hot springs. Additionally, they will have the unique opportunity to interact with the native people and explore their customs, including their beautiful textile crafts.

The cultural experience deepens in the Urubamba Valley, known as the «Sacred Valley of the Incas», and culminates in the spectacular archaeological site of Machu Picchu. The walk passes through the Lares region, north of Cusco, renowned for its rural atmosphere, traditional weavers dressed in colorful costumes, and herds of alpacas and llamas, which are a living symbol of Peruvian life.

During trekking, comfortable mountain huts serve as luxury base camps, from where daily hikes are made to remote passes with panoramic views of waterfalls, snow-capped peaks and turquoise glacial lagoons. Travelers can spot condors flying high above and visit small high Andean communities that have preserved their traditions for centuries. Here, you can meet local weavers and farmers, and immerse yourself in the history of the place.

The Lares Trek is an incomparable experience that combines nature, culture and adventure in one of the most impressive environments in Peru.

Itinerary

DAY 1: CUSCO TOUR – LARES VALLEY – WACAHUASI

The transfer from the hotel is scheduled for 5 am, leaving for the picturesque town of Lares. During the journey, we can enjoy the impressive views of the majestic Sacred Valley with its fertile lands. Our first stop is in the small town of Calca, located 2940 meters above sea level. From here, we ascend passing through the villages of Totora and Maucaupata, where the residents dress in typical costumes and are mainly dedicated to textiles, agriculture and livestock.

After approximately 4 hours of travel, we arrive at Lares, located 3200 meters above sea level. Here, we will have the opportunity to visit the local thermal baths to enjoy a refreshing soak. After lunch and after coordinating with our mule drivers, we began the walk to our first camp in Wacawasi, located 3600 meters above sea level. The estimated walking time to this point is 4 hours.

After breakfast, we begin our hike towards our second campsite of the day. We start early to ascend towards Abra Ipsay, during the journey we will be able to appreciate various peasant communities and their varied customs, as well as the textiles that they themselves weave for their daily use.

We will arrive at the Ipsaycocha lagoon, where we will enjoy our lunch. After a well-deserved rest, we will continue our way to the town of Patacancha, where we will spend the second night of our trekking.

After breakfast, we will continue our walk to the small town of Willoq, known for its original customs. On the way, we will pass through several small towns where we can observe the archaeological remains of Qochapata and Pumamarca.

At approximately 2:00 pm we will arrive at the town of Ollantaytambo, where we will enjoy lunch. After lunch, we will have free time until 7:30 pm to explore on our own. Then, we will board the train to Aguas Calientes, where we will spend our last night in a lodging with a private bathroom and hot water.

Very early we will begin our walk towards the Inca city of Machu Picchu to witness the sunrise. Then, we’ll enjoy a guided tour of approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes to explore this historical wonder.

After the guided tour, we will have free time until 3:00 pm to continue exploring on our own. At 4:00 pm, we will board the train back to Cusco.
