The Q’eswachaka Inca Bridge, recognized as «Intangible Cultural Heritage» by UNESCO, is one of the most impressive tourist destinations in Cusco. It is located approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes from the city, in the Canas district. This suspension bridge is an extraordinary example of Inca engineering and local craftsmanship.
The bridge is built with reed ropes, woven with a special technique known as Qeswa, which is done by the local inhabitants of the region. During the Q’eswachaka Inca Bridge tour, visitors can enjoy a walk to the bridge, surrounded by stunning scenery with views of the mountains and rivers flowing below. In addition to experiencing nature in its splendor, tourists will learn about the rich history and culture of the region.
Once on the bridge, you will have the opportunity to cross it on foot and admire the amazing skill of local craftsmen in its construction and maintenance. This experience offers a unique and unforgettable encounter for travelers seeking to explore authentic and meaningful destinations in Peru.
We will begin our tour by picking you up from your accommodation at 5:00 am and leave the city at 5:30 am. The trip will take us approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes to Cusipata, where we will enjoy our INCLUDED breakfast in a local house.
From there, we will begin our journey admiring the beautiful landscape that this region offers, full of flora and fauna. Our first destination will be the Pomacanchi Lagoon, where we will begin the first circuit that includes the Acopia, Asnaqocha and Pampamarca lagoons. After exploring and appreciating these natural attractions, we will go to a town where we will visit the house of Túpac Amaru II. We will make a brief visit to the place and then continue to the Inca Bridge of Q’eswachaka, located over the Apurímac River, with a length of 30 meters and a height of 3780 meters above sea level. Here we will explore the place and learn about this Inca bridge, which is renovated annually in the month of June using the local plant known as ichu or straw.
After this part of the tour, we will return to the town of Checacupe, where we can see three bridges from different periods: an Inca bridge, a colonial bridge and a current bridge. They will have free time to take the corresponding photographs. Finally, we will return to Cusipata to enjoy our INCLUDED lunch, at approximately 2:00 pm. Then we will return to Cusco, arriving in the city around 5:30 pm.
THE ANNUAL RECONSTRUCTION
The «Q’eswachaka» bridge requires annual maintenance because the straw (Ichu) used for its construction begins to decompose over time. Since Inca times, the reconstruction has been carried out in just 3 days, just before the second Sunday of the month of June. The fourth day concludes the ceremony with a folk festival, where the unique traditions and customs of the region are shared, becoming a significant and culturally important celebration.
