Overview

It is a magnificent alternative route from the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, where travelers can enjoy spectacular landscapes along the original Inca trail. This route is ideal for those tourists who have not managed to get a place on the traditional Inca Trail and also for nature lovers.

During the Salkantay trek, participants will be able to admire the imposing snow-capped Salkantay mountains, as well as rivers, waterfalls and picturesque typical villages. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to interact with local inhabitants, whose livelihood is based on livestock and agriculture in this area.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa – Inca Trail Salkantay Trek

The night before the start of the tour, we will have a brief talk with the guide about the Salkantay Inca Trail trek.

On the first day, we will pick up participants from their hotels in Cusco at 4:30 am and we will go by tourist bus for 3 hours to the town of Mollepata. There we will meet the muleteers and horses, and we will also have time to enjoy breakfast. After breakfast, we will continue by bus for another 30 minutes until we reach the starting point of the hike in Cruzpata.

This day will not be so demanding, since most of the route will be on a flat surface. During the first 3 hours of walking, we will enjoy unique landscapes of the Peruvian Andes, with high snow-covered mountains, streams and dwarf trees characteristic of the mountains. After lunch and a time to rest, we will continue walking for an additional 2 hours until we reach our first camp in Soraypampa, located 3500 meters above sea level (20,671 feet).

This day, passengers who wish will have the opportunity to visit the Humantay lagoon, a turquoise lagoon surrounded by an imposing snow-capped mountain, which will undoubtedly make them feel that they are in an incredible and magical place.

This day we will walk at the foot of Apu Salkantay, observing the charming geography just below us. At the Salkantay Pass, we will participate in an Inca Ceremony known as Payment to the Land or Pachamama (Jaywarikuy), requesting permission to have a fabulous and unforgettable trip.

After the ceremony, we will have lunch in Huayrac. Then we will begin to descend towards Challhuaypampa , following the course of the Salkantay River. At this point, we will have the opportunity to enjoy the most beautiful landscapes of the Andes. Here we will camp, located approximately 2900 meters above sea level.

The meals included in the Salkantay trek will be: Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea and Dinner.

After a very early breakfast, we will start our day earlier than usual. We will arrive at Playa, a populated center where we will enjoy lunch. This day promises to be very pleasant, since we will be able to see waterfalls and we will cross a mountain along the way.

Then, we will take a transport to get to Santa Teresa. In this place, we will have the opportunity to visit the thermal baths of Cocalmayo and relax in the hot springs while enjoying a refreshing ice-cold Cuzqueña beer. If you wish, at night you can go out dancing and explore the charming town of Santa Teresa.

The meals included in the Salkantay trek will be: Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea and Dinner.

We started our hike very early, enjoying incredible scenery as we crossed bridges and walked along the river. Our destination is to reach the Machu Picchu Hydroelectric Plant. From here, there is the option to take a train to Aguas Calientes or continue walking. In total, the hike will take approximately 5 hours, culminating in Aguas Calientes, known as the «town of Machu Picchu.»

In Aguas Calientes, we will stay in a hotel with a private bathroom and hot water. We will have a special dinner as a celebration for reaching our goal.

This long-awaited day begins very early, at 4:30 am, when we begin a 1 hour and 30 minute walk towards the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu, arriving at approximately 6 am. There, we will enjoy a 2-hour guided tour of the main sectors of this historical wonder.

After the guided tour, we will have free time until 5 pm to continue exploring the most beautiful places in Machu Picchu.

At the time indicated by our guide, we will go to the train station to board the train back to the town of Ollantaytambo. From there, we will return to the city of Cusco in approximately 4 hours by bus.
