During the journey to the Mountain of Colors, visitors can enjoy spectacular natural landscapes, with winding roads that cross snow-capped mountains and small typical towns. Reaching the top of the Montaña de Colores, which is located 5,100 meters above sea level, is an unforgettable experience that allows you to appreciate the magnificence of this natural wonder.
The shade of colors in the mountains can vary depending on weather conditions. On sunny days, colors appear vibrant and clear, while on cloudy days they may appear dimmer. During the tour, it is also possible to spot a variety of local fauna such as camelids (llamas, alpacas), birds such as the Huallata and the Andean Condor, as well as vizcachas. As for the flora, you can see species such as the Ichu (straw), the Yareta and the Huaracco.
Ausangate, known locally as Awsanqati in Quechua, stands out as the fifth highest mountain in Peru, with a maximum altitude of 6,372 meters above sea level. The trip continues for approximately 3 hours, passing through Urcos and Checacupe, until reaching the typical town of Pitumarca, where you can enjoy a delicious breakfast.
After another hour of road travel, with stunning scenery that includes a small canyon, you arrive in Chillca (Ocefina) around 7:30 am. Everything necessary for the trek is provided here, and passengers have the option of renting horses if they wish. The hike up to the Montaña de Colores lasts approximately 3 hours. Along the way, local residents offer a warm welcome and services such as muleteers and horses.
During the walk, you can see distant views of snow-capped mountains and wonderful landscapes. You cross the town of Machuracay and finally reach the Montaña de Colores.
